PROSE & CONS Speech and Debate Club
WHO ARE WE?
"Prose and Cons" Speech and Debate Club and "Heavenly Hollywood" Drama Club are clubs for home schooled students ages 12 through 18. Our goal is to train students to become better communicators. Our theme verse is: "Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one." Colossians 4:6. The club was established in September of 2003 to meet a need for training in speech in our community. NCFCA membership is recommended although it is not required to attend club. All NCFCA rules for speech and debate are our guidelines for evaluation purposes. Participation in speech club is mandatory to participate in "Heavenly Hollywood" because speech and drama go hand in hand.
WHEN AND WHERE DO WE MEET?
We meet on Thursdays from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm at First Christian Church, 960 W. Victory Way, Craig, Colorado.
WHAT DO WE DO?
Our first hour is devoted to speech or debate. We start with the basics of getting up in front of other people and speaking. Then we progress on to more challenging speeches of many different types. We have not yet fielded a debate team. We have studied and done a couple of mock debates, but so far our students are more interested in interpretive events. Some of our members attended their first competition last spring at the Rocky Mountain Classic in Denver. They really enjoyed their experience and plan on trying again this year.

The second hour each week is focused on drama. We generally work through the basics of acting and play production. In 2005 we produced an evening of 3 one act plays. Last year the students wrote, produced and directed their own movie. This year we will be presenting a full length play in late winter (February or March). Scripts will be available before Christmas break and tryouts will be January 10, 2008.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
I do not charge for this class. I volunteer my time and many resources. All I ask in return is cooperative students and parental involvement. There will be nominal charges related to the class such as NCFCA membership, texts that you want to purchase, script deposits, etc. Each family is responsible for all charges associated with travel, conferences and competitions. We have competed in the Down Town Parade of Lights for three years, and two of those years we placed second and received prize money, which defrayed some costs of the play production.
IS IT TOO LATE TO JOIN THIS YEAR?
No! We would love to have you. Please contact me and I can answer any questions you may have.
WHERE IS CRAIG, COLORADO?
We are one of the last towns on the edge of "no where". About 45 miles west of Steamboat Springs on Hwy. 40. We are a very well known area for hunting elk, deer and antelope. We have cold winters. We are geographically and weather challenged in the winter months. There are 4 mountain passes between us and Denver, and the roads in between can be scary with white outs. So, if you don't see us on the Front Range before the crocuses come up, then you can probably guess why!
WHO IS THE COACH/TEACHER?
My name is Bonnie Reiman. I have been a home school mom since 1992. I was blessed with two children, who still live in our home. Heidi went to public school for her first two and a half years, she has been home schooled since then graduating in 2003. James has always been home schooled and graduated in May 2007.

My background: I was raised in Flagstaff, Arizona and graduated from Flagstaff High School in May 1976. I attended Northern Arizona University for two and a half years. I married Jim in February 1979. We knew each other from Sunday School when we were young kids. We love each other and support each other in the work God puts before us.

I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that he died and rose again and is coming again someday to gather us to Him. I came to know the Lord at my mother's knee at age 6
and baptized when I was 7. God has been working on me for a while! I have always been active in the local church, be it Baptist or Non-Denominational or just Christian. I was an AWANA leader from 1992 to 2001. I have also been at times a Sunday School Teacher, VBS Director, teacher, helper, active in Choir and Worship Team, have attended and participated in Bible studies of various types. The Bible contains all the information we need to have a relationship with God and it is through His grace we have salvation.

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast" Ephesians 2:8,9
